NMMSS scholarship application deadline extended to October 31

New Delhi, Oct 2 (INB) The Ministry of Education has extended the deadline for submission of applications under the NMMSS for the academic year 2026-27 to October 31, providing eligible students additional time to apply through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), it said.
Students who have already submitted their applications should ensure that their applications are verified by the Institute Nodal Officer (L1) by November 15 and by the District Nodal Officer (L2) by November 30, according to an official statement issued by the ministry of education. The NSP has been accepting applications under the scheme since June 1. Students are required to complete their One-Time Registration (OTR) on the portal before submitting their scholarship applications.
As of September 30, a total of 88,522 fresh and 1,97,133 renewal applications had been submitted, the ministry said on Thursday. The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) aims to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections and encourage them to continue their education beyond Class VIII up to Class XII.
Under the scheme, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded annually to eligible Class IX students who qualify in the selection examination conducted by the respective state or Union Territory governments. The scholarship is subsequently continued from Classes X to XII through renewal, subject to prescribed academic requirements, it stated. Eligible students studying in state government, government-aided and local body schools receive a scholarship of Rs 12,000 per annum, which is transferred directly into their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
For appearing in the selection test, students are required to have secured at least 55 per cent marks or an equivalent grade in Class VII. A relaxation of five percentage points is available to students belonging to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories. The annual parental income of applicants should not exceed Rs 3.50 lakh, according to the ministry.
