New Delhi, Sept 7 (INB) The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demanded accountability from authorities and a comprehensive safety audit of paying guest (PG) hostels in Delhi following the collapse of a residential building in Satya Niketan near Delhi University’s South Campus, it said.
A CJP delegation led by its organisation co-incharge and north zone lead Deepak Baliyan and National Joint Secretary Balakrishna Shukla visited the collapse site and said its volunteers were assisting local residents and emergency personnel in the rescue operations, the civil activist group said in a statement on Sunday. It claimed that multiple students were feared trapped under the debris, and said its volunteers would remain at the site to assist affected families and monitor the rescue operations until all students were accounted for. CJP founder and convenor Abhijeet Dipke criticised the government over the condition of student accommodation and alleged administrative neglect of educational infrastructure. “Students deserve safe classrooms, safe housing and basic dignity,” Dipke said, questioning how long students would have to bear the consequences of inadequate infrastructure while pursuing education. According to the party, local residents initially joined the rescue efforts and attempted to clear debris with their bare hands before emergency services reached the site. The CJP also demanded a swift inquiry into municipal oversight of student accommodations in the area and called for safety audits of PG hostels across Delhi. Dipke also referred to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s reported cancellation of a scheduled visit to Goa following news of the building collapse, and contrasted the attention given to political infrastructure with the condition of schools, colleges and hostels. “While grand BJP Bhavans are being built across states, students are being forced to study and live in unsafe and inadequate infrastructure,” Dipke said, adding that educational infrastructure should be prioritised over “grandiose political establishments”. The CJP said recurring failures in educational infrastructure could have serious consequences and urged authorities to ensure safe schools, functional hostels and adequate facilities for students.
