IIM Bangalore to Open First Overseas Campus in Indonesia, Announces PM Modi

New Delhi, Jul 7 (INB) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) will establish its first overseas campus in Indonesia, marking a major step in the internationalisation of India’s higher education ecosystem. The announcement was made during Modi’s visit to Indonesia in a joint statement with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The proposed campus will be set up at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Malang. The campus is expected to serve Indonesian students while also attracting participants from other Southeast Asian countries, strengthening educational cooperation between India and Indonesia and enhancing India’s engagement with the ASEAN region. Officials said the initiative aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages leading Indian institutions to expand globally and improve access to world-class education. The curriculum will focus on five key areas — global supply chains, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, climate and sustainability, and healthcare management. It will also include interactions with industry leaders, academicians and global experts. The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will offer executive education programmes for senior professionals and public sector executives. Degree-granting management programmes will be introduced in the second phase, subject to the successful rollout of the initial programmes. The campus will be developed under a memorandum of understanding between IIM Bangalore and PT Intelegensia Grahatama, the managing and development entity of the Singhasari SEZ. The proposed campus follows the establishment of overseas campuses by IIM Ahmedabad in Dubai, IIT Delhi in Abu Dhabi and IIT Madras in Zanzibar, reflecting India’s growing global presence in higher education.
