IIT Bombay Racing tops Formula Student Portugal 2026 EV category; Driverless team wins inaugural title

Mumbai, Aug 6 (INB) IIT Bombay Racing has secured the overall championship in the Electric Vehicle (EV) category, while IIT Bombay Racing Driverless won the Driverless Cup at Formula Student Portugal 2026, marking one of the institute’s best performances at the international engineering competition, the premier institute said. The Driverless team also became the first Indian Formula Student team to participate in the Driverless category at an international Formula Student competition. IIT Bombay Racing completed the 22-km Endurance event, considered the competition’s toughest dynamic discipline that evaluates vehicle reliability, efficiency and performance under sustained racing conditions. According to an X post by IIT Bombay on Wednesday, the team secured first place in the Engineering Design Presentation and Efficiency events, while finishing second in Endurance and Cost and Manufacturing, and fourth in the Business Plan Presentation to emerge overall champion in the EV category. The Driverless team also claimed first place in both the Overall Standings and the Engineering Design Presentation in the Driverless Cup, it said. Apart from its success in Portugal, IIT Bombay Racing also competed at Formula Student Switzerland 2026, finishing 13th overall as part of its international campaign, it added. The institute said the achievements reflect the team’s continued focus on innovation, performance engineering and autonomous mobility, while acknowledging the support of IIT Bombay, its sponsors, faculty mentors and international collaborators.
