NPCIL, IIT Bombay sign pact to develop deep soil mixing tech for nuclear power projects

Mumbai, Jul 29 (INB) State-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) and IIT Bombay have signed a MoU to jointly develop and validate a technique for the upcoming 700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) units 3 and 4 at the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP), according to an official announcement. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) aims to undertake technical development and field trials to establish the feasibility and effectiveness of the the deep soil mixing (DSM) technique for ground improvement at the project site in Haryana, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay posted on its official X account on Tuesday. The pact was signed at IIT’s Powai campus on July 8, it added. It further said the technology will be used for the first time at a nuclear power plant in India and is expected to enable faster and safer construction of nuclear facilities at sites with soil as the founding strata. The collaboration is also expected to facilitate the development of DSM as a viable ground improvement method for future nuclear power projects, thereby supporting India’s target of achieving 100 GWe of nuclear power capacity by 2047 and its net-zero emissions goal by 2070. The agreement was signed by NPCIL Executive Director (Engineering) Sulok Kumar Saxena and IIT Bombay Dean (Research and Development) Prof Shrikrishna V Kulkarni in the presence of Project Investigator Prof Deepankar Choudhury and senior officials of both organisations, according to the post.
