NCERT to hold five-day online training programme on deafblindness awareness

New Delhi, June 24 (INB) The Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET), a constituent of NCERT, in collaboration with Sense International India, will organise a five-day online training programme titled “Exploring Deafblindness: Empowering Societies” from June 29 to July 3, 2026, to raise awareness and build understanding about deafblindness.
The programme is being organised in observance of DeafBlind Awareness Week and Helen Keller Day. It aims to enhance awareness among educators, caregivers and the general public about the challenges faced by persons with deafblindness and the support systems available to improve their quality of life.
Deafblindness is a condition involving a combination of visual and hearing impairments that significantly affects communication, mobility, learning and access to information. Organisers said the condition remains a low-incidence and often hidden disability, leading to limited public awareness and understanding.
The training programme will cover topics including causes and types of deafblindness, communication strategies, inclusive educational practices, assistive technologies, vocational opportunities, independent living and community participation. Participants will also have an opportunity to learn directly from persons with deafblindness to foster empathy and positive attitudes.
According to the organisers, participants completing the programme will gain foundational knowledge of deafblindness, understand alternative communication methods, explore inclusive education approaches and become familiar with technologies and services that promote accessibility and independence.
The programme is open to all interested individuals and does not require prior experience or specialised knowledge.
