IIT Roorkee develops self-powered smart bandage for wound healing

Roorkee, Sep 11 (INB) Researchers at IIT Roorkee, in collaboration with INST Mohali, have developed a self-powered smart electronic bandage that converts natural body movement into electrical stimulation to support wound healing without batteries, wires or an external power source, it said on Friday.
The innovation, named 3D-MIDAS, converts mechanical energy generated by routine body movements into electrical stimulation without requiring batteries, wires or an external power source, IIT Roorkee said in a LinkedIn post. Led by Prof Kaushik Parida, the research team developed a flexible scaffold capable of stretching up to 800 per cent of its original length, making it suitable for applications involving movement and flexible wound care. In animal studies, the technology demonstrated three times higher cell proliferation, 2.5 times greater cell migration and 90-95 per cent wound closure within 13-15 days, according to the institute. The innovation combines advanced materials, energy harvesting and bioelectronics and could pave the way for flexible, self-powered wound-care technologies and future wearable biomedical applications, it added. The research involved teams from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and INST Mohali and was supported by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF).
